Do you accept bookings for stag and hen parties?
Unfortunately we cannot accept bookings for these or similar events. Please contact us to discuss your requirements.
Is it possible to cancel or amend my booking?
Guests can cancel their booking within 14 days before the date of arrival and a 50% refund will be given. If the cancellation is between 7-13 days before the date of arrival then a 25% refund will be given. Cancellations made between 3 to 6 days prior to date of arrival, are eligible for a 10% refund but for any cancellations made 2 days or less prior to date of arrival no refund will be paid. Please also refer to the current Covid-19 arrangements for cancellations.
Can I hire the whole hostel for my group?
Yes, you can opt for our Exclusive / ‘Sole Use’ booking option and get exclusive use of our fantastic hostel with self catering kitchens included. Exclusive / ‘Sole Use’ hire is perfect for work or family gatherings, celebrations (now including weddings)! and activity breaks – as well as offering a great base for trips for your hill walking, cycling, canoeing etc. clubs. Please note we do not accept stag or hen parties at the hostel.
Do you take group bookings?
Large groups (ten or more guests) are welcome at our hostel, including clubs, youth groups, school and university groups. For more information please refer to the Group Bookings section of our Terms and Conditions link here.
Groups can also use our Exclusive / Sole Use booking option and get exclusive use of our fantastic hostel with self catering kitchens included. Please note we do not accept stag or hen parties at the hostel.

Are there any age restrictions?
Guests must be over 18 to stay in our hostel without an adult. All children and young persons under the age of 16 who wish to stay at the Hostel must be accompanied by a responsible adult (over 18 years of age; proof of age may be required). Guests under the age of 16, even when accompanied by their responsible adult, are not permitted to stay in a shared room with other guests, unless unavoidable due to availability or their late booking, and only by agreement of all parties concerned.
Guests with infants are responsible for bringing a travel cot and all other related equipment. Guests travelling with infants should notify the Warden at the time of booking to ensure that suitable accommodation is available. Children under the age of 10 years are not permitted to occupy upper bunks, except in the triple bedroom (Jura) where the minimum age for the upper bunk is 6 years. Is the hostel closed during the day?
The Hostel is usually closed 10:30-16:00, and only guests who have booked to stay more than 1 night will have access to the hostel during the day, other than times when the Warden needs access for cleaning ‘common-areas’ etc.
What’s the maximum number of days I can stay at the hostel?
The maximum duration of any stay at the Hostel is 7 consecutive night per person per visit, (exception for ‘essential/contract workers’ who have their permanent address in the UK).
When do I need to check out?
Guests are asked to vacate their room(s)/hostel by 10:30hrs, but can still use the 'Common-room' until midday.
What time can I check in?
Guests can check-in from 16:00 -18:00 and between 20:00 – 21:00. If you arrive before 16:00 it may not be possible to get access to your room although you may be able to store your luggage until check-in. *Please note that we are not available for check-in between 18:00-20:00.
How will I know that my booking has been confirmed?
Your booking is not actually confirmed until you receive email/text confirmation from Argyll Backpackers Hostel or their online booking agent. If you don’t receive a confirmation message then please check your junk mail folder before contacting us to check the position.
Can I pay by cash?
Guests who arrive at the hostel without prior booking will be able to make payment in cash. A receipt can be provided on request.
Can I pay by credit / debit card?
Guests can only use debit and credit cards via our online booking system.
How can I pay for my stay?
Payment can be made by any of the following methods:-
Freetobook (or our current system at the time of booking) & Stripe (or current online payment system);
Bank Transfer to TSB Business Account:- Sort Code: 87.43.60, Acc No: 75761868. Please ensure you use your Surname & Date of Arrival as a Reference;
To secure your booking, payment should be made in advance and full payment (100%) of the total cost of the stay will be payable.
Do I have to bring my own bike lock?
Although the hostel is in a quiet rural area, we always advise you to bring your own bike lock – especially as some guests can have expensive bikes!
Is there a bike shed?
Yes, we have a covered area for storing bikes as well as other free standing cycle racks around the hostel. Air pump, bike repair stand etc are available too.
Is there free parking at the hostel?
Yes, the Hostel has parking for 7 vehicles with an additional 1 disabled parking space, as well as space for motorbikes. For more information, please see the section on parking in our Terms and Conditions.
We are travelling with children; is the hostel family friendly?
We love having families with children staying with us, but as you’d expect we need to make sure that we can meet your requirements, so it’s always a good idea to get in touch to tell us more about the ages of the children and any other relevant information. Please refer to full details in our terms and conditions.
Do you have single gender shared dorm rooms?
We have 2 dorm rooms for 4 & 6 guests, which are outside the main hostel but still within the same building. These can be used for single gender, small group or family bookings, depending on your requirements and availability.
What facilities do you have for guests with disabilities?
We make every effort to provide accessible facilities at our hostel, full details are available on our website. Our 6 bed bunk room is fully accessible with a walk/roll-in shower and accessible WC. 2 further bedrooms are accessible for limited ability guests as they have low threshold shower trays. All common areas of the hostel can be accessed by wheelchair users. We also have disabled parking and ramp access to the walkway around the hostel’s outside eating area. Please discuss any specific requirements with us prior to booking.
Will I have to share a room?
No, you don’t have to share a room. In addition to our en-suite bunk rooms for 4 & 6, we offer a range of ‘private’ accommodation, including single, twin and family rooms...all our bedrooms are en-suite!
Will my room be cleaned during my stay?
Your room will be fully cleaned and disinfected/sananited prior to your arrival and cleaned again on your departure. In general staff won’t enter your bedroom during your stay, except with your agreement (e.g. to rectify a maintenance issue), however the Warden may enter guest rooms to ensure compliance with Hostel Terms and Conditions, particularly in regard to guest safety and security.
Can we bring alcohol into the hostel?
Guests are allowed to bring / consume their own alcohol, but should drink and behave responsibly, to take account of other guests. Guests under 18 will not be permitted to drink alcohol on the premises and proof of age may be required.
Where can I put my belongings?
'PRIVATE ACCOMMODATION': All bedrooms have keypad locks.
'SHARED ACCOMMODATION': Any luggage that doesn’t contain valuables, such as clothes and toiletries, can be left in your room. Phones, cameras, laptops, passports, etc, should be kept on your person or safeguarded if you are staying in a shared room.

Can I get Wi-Fi at the hostel?
Yes, we have free Wi-Fi which can be accessed in most areas of the hostel, the code is displayed by the guest noticeboard.
Is there a kettle in the room?
All rooms now have a kettle and mugs and our external bunk rooms (for 4&6) also now have a microwave and coolbox for those guests who don’t need to use the kitchen facilities.
Can we buy food or meals at the hostel?
We have a small stock of tinned/dry foods available for guests to purchase – prices are available on request. Although we don’t serve meals, we can arrange a collection service from local take-away premises – please ask us for details.
Does the hostel have kitchen facilities?
Yes. The hostel has a fully equipped self-catering kitchen, comprising 3 separate kitchen areas, each with it’s own double hob, kettle, toaster and sink. One of which is suitable for wheelchair access. There are 3x microwaves and oven/grills, as well as a large fridge and a small fridge. This is a shared facility and we encourage everyone to consider other guests when using equipment and storage space as well as ensuring that all surfaces, utensils and equipment is kept clean. Each room has it's own lockable cupboard containing crockery/cutlery/glasses/teatowel. There are shelves in the large fridge and dry food racks both marked for use by guests in each of our rooms. Complimentary tea and coffee is provided, plus there is usually basic cereals & cooking oil etc. Please refer to specific Covid-19 arrangements detailed here.
Do you supply bedding and towels?
All bed linen is provided within the cost of your accommodation but there is a small charge for the hire of personal towels.
What can I expect when staying at your hostel?
You’ll always get a warm welcome, comfortable, clean, safe environment within a range of ‘private’ or shared accommodation and are suitable for individuals, couples, families and groups...all bedrooms are ensuite!
What is a hostel?
Hostels offer great value, safe, flexible, ‘private’ or shared ensuite accommodation and always a warm welcome! You’ll be able to discuss your travel plans with the Warden and other guests, to benefit from their local and expert local knowledge. Our rooms provide a range of accommodation for singles, couples, families and groups – all at affordable prices. Our hostel is open to all, whatever age and wherever you’re from - everyone is welcome.
Is there a bus stop near the hostel?
The service bus between Glasgow and Campbeltown (Citylink 926) passes our door and the driver will usually be happy to drop you off / pick up right at the hostel. One service a day even travels via Glasgow airport.
Where is the hostel located?
The hostel is within the small hamlet of Inverneil, right on the shore of Loch Fyne, ideally situated for island hopping or exploring local routes (Kintyre Way, Caledonian NCN 78, Kintyre 66 etc). Just 2 miles south of Ardrishaig the start (or end) of the Crinan Canal, and 10 miles from Tarbert, there’s easy access to the beach and to local woodland.
Where can I buy food to cook at the hostel?
Depending on which route you’re travelling you can pick up supplies in Lochgilphead (5 miles away) or Ardrishaig (2 miles away) if travelling north to south or from Tarbert (10 miles away) if travelling south to north.
How far is it to the nearest shops / cafes / bars?
The nearest mini market / grocery store is 2 miles away in Ardrishaig, although there’s a bigger range of shops and a supermarket in Lochgilphead (5 miles from the hostel). The nearest restaurant is in the Grey Gull in Ardrishaig, but again there are other cafes, restaurants and bars in Lochgilphead or in Tarbert (10 miles from the hostel).
Are dogs allowed in all areas of the hostel?
Dogs are only allowed in ‘common areas’ of the hostel if kept on a short lead and do not cause distress to other guests. Dogs are not allowed in the kitchen area or on beds or other furniture. In consideration of other guests please adhere to our Terms and Conditions section here.
Is there an extra charge for dogs?
no, we don’t charge for dogs other than if we need to carry out extra cleaning, in which case we reserve the right to charge £15 / hour. Please let us know in advance if you plan to bring your dog(s). In consideration of other guests please adhere to our Terms and Conditions section. We also accept registered assistance dogs at our hostels, but again, please notify us of this when booking.
We will ask you for confirmation that your dog(s) has been fully inoculated, that it is well behaved and will not be left alone for any period of time.
Is the hostel dog friendly?
Yes, small/medium sized dogs are welcome at Argyll Backpackers, up to a maximum of 2 per room, or more at the discretion of the Warden if Group/’Sole Use’ is booked. There is usually no charge unless additional cleaning is required (charged at £15 / hour). Please let us know in advance if you plan to bring your dog(s). In consideration of other guests please adhere to our Terms and Conditions section. We also accept registered assistance dogs at our hostels, but again, please notify us of this when booking.
